SPIRITUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR LENT
Lenten Discussions with Father Perry: Sunday, March 7th, 14th and 21st from 5 to 7 p.m.:
Although the writers of the New Testament portray God as the loving Father, various Scripture passages and our own experiences can seem to challenge, if not contradict, this assertion and leave us asking poignant questions that can lead to spiritual uncertainty. For example: Why wasn’t I healed? What am I to think about those vengeful punishment passages? Is God a prosecuting attorney or a defense lawyer? Does God send anyone to hell? Does God cause suffering for any reason? Is God the Father also God the Mother?
These are the kinds of questions that will be motivating our Lenten discussions. Join Father Perry on three Sunday evenings in Lent at 5 p.m. for good food and stimulating discussion. We’ll begin with a pot-luck supper – so bring a favorite dish to share. During the meal Father Perry will read appropriate passages from Scripture that elicit questions about the nature of God. Then – let the discussion begin! Our conversations will revolve around the questions above and similar ones that will challenge all of us to reflect on what our faith means to us, to listen to what it may mean to others and to discuss how we live out our beliefs in our everyday life.
So feel free to join us on March 7th, 14th, and 21st at 5:00 p.m.! Children are welcome and will have a special activity to engage them while the adults are involved in discussion. Please call the office or talk to Father Perry for more information.
A Visual Exploration of Holy Week: Sunday, March 28th, Palm/Passion Sunday:
Palm/Passion Sunday may be viewed as “Holy Week in microcosm.” Our worship begins in Phelps Hall with the Liturgy of the Palms that reenacts Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. As soon as we move into the church the mood of our worship changes dramatically. It is now Good Friday and our liturgy revolves around the reading of the Passion of Jesus Christ that recalls the events from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion and burial of Jesus. As such, this Sunday is solemn in nature and is intended to leave us meditating on these events in anticipation of Easter Day - the Day of Resurrection.
In keeping with the nature of our worship on this day, a simple coffee hour will immediately follow both services. During this time of fellowship, Father Perry will host a slide show and discussion that will explore the events of Holy Week and how they are presented through the special liturgies that will be scheduled at St. Peter’s including the Way of the Cross, Tenebrae, Maundy Thursday, the Prayer Vigil, Good Friday and the Great Vigil of Easter. Note that a special program will be available for younger children during Father Perry’s presentation. Make your Palm/Passion Sunday special and plan to join us for this time of fellowship and learning.
