Angel Food Ministries
What is “Angel Food Ministries”?
AFM is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States.
How does it work?
Angel Food Ministries buys food in bulk from suppliers at substantial volume discounts and is thus able to provide families with approximately $65 worth of quality nutritious food (fresh, frozen & packaged) for $30. One box or unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month.
Can anyone participate?
There are no clubs to join, no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions or applications. Everyone is encouraged to participate!
Where do I go and how do I get the food?
Orders and distribution are handled by church host sites. In our case, the host site is Christ Church Lutheran in Hebron. Orders are collected by the host site during the first part of each month. Several days later the host site distributes locally what was received from the main AFM warehouse.
St. Peter’s has recently committed to support this program by providing volunteers and distributing monthly menus. If you would like to know more about this ministry, please speak to Father Perry or call the parish office.
Mentors Needed
Would you like to make a positive difference to a child? Andover/Hebron/Marlborough Youth and Family Services has the opportunity for you to be a mentor for children and youth in the local schools. Mentors are trained in areas such as communication, mentoring session strategies and setting goals. The mentoring relationship takes place once a week within the school during school hours.
Young people with mentors are more likely to resist peer pressure and substance abuse, stay in school, achieve and aspire to better grades, and continue on to college.
Mentoring can not only benefit a child but can also help the mentor increase his or her leadership and communication skills and provide much joy by having a positive effect on a young person’s life.
Mentors are currently needed in Andover, Marlborough and Hebron. If you are interested in learning more about mentoring opportunities, please contact Laurie Larsen, AHM Lanterns Mentoring Coordinator (860-228-0871).
We live out our faith by helping those in need!
Summer- Time to relax with family and friends, to be more carefree and appreciate the joys around us. Not likely to happen for those who are unemployed, underemployed, and those with insufficient income to meet their basic needs for shelter, food, and utilities. This may be true within our own families, for the person in the pew next to ours, for our neighbor.
To that end, we will be seeking donations for social services in our parish towns. We are collecting:
• non-perishable food items
• paper goods
• cleaning supplies
• pet foods, cat litter
• baby food and supplies
• school supplies
• money.
There is a large collection jar in the church. Area food banks can buy much more from the FoodShare distribution center than we can purchase in the stores. We donated to Hebron in May and June. We will collect for residents in Colchester in July, Marlborough in August, Columbia in September, and Lebanon/Andover in October. Holiday outreach efforts will be made in November and December.
Anything we can do is valuable and is the work of people of faith. Giving is an activity to share with our children. Please make giving back from what you have received a priority.
