In this time of great uncertainty one way to combat anxiety is through humorous storytelling. Elizabeth McCain developed a humorous one-woman play based on life events. The material of McCain’s play resembles talented writers’ styles such as Dorothy Allison’s honesty, Julia Reed’s Southern sass and irreverence, and David Sedaris’s satirical wit.

A Lesbian Belle Tells affirms and validates the LGBTQ community and beyond, with universal themes of self-discovery, acceptance, family struggles, forgiveness, loss, and love. McCain spins stories with a beating heart and dispenses a powerful dose of medicine for the soul to heal just about anything. The performance will be part of PRIDE celebration sponsored by Small Town PRIDE and East Hampton PRIDE.

This speech was given by Frederick Douglass in June 1852 to the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society. It became one of Douglass’s most famous speeches—criticizing the chasm between America’s Founding principles and the institution of slavery. Douglass lamented that Independence Day wasn’t a day of celebration for enslaved people. At the same time, he urged his audience to read the U.S. Constitution not as a pro-slavery document, but as a “GLORIOUS LIBERTY DOCUMENT.”

Since 1985 actor and orator Fred Morsell has embodied Frederick Douglass in performances across the country. He brought his character to life in Washington DC, bringing it to every high school thanks to a grant by the National Humanities Council and the Caring Institute. He will perform this great speech as part of the Juneteenth Weekend in collaboration with the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE). Now 85 years old he will be coming to us all the way from his home in Montana. His performance is in the great tradition of historical enactment performers, much in the same way Hal Holbrook embodied Mark Twain. This is yet another unique performance you will not want to miss.

The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows,” and has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning service of Holy Week. In medieval times Tenebrae came to be celebrated on evenings earlier in the week as a devotional prelude to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
This service is marked by a reading from the book of Lamentations and the gradual extinguishing of candles after the recitation of psalms or Canticles until the single Pascal candle, considered a symbol of the Lord, remains. Towards the end of the service, this candle is removed, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil with the death of Jesus. A loud noise is made symbolizing the chaos of the world without the light of Christ. The Pascal candle is restored to its place and by its light (the light of Christ) all depart in silence.

Sunday of Juneteenth weekend at St. Peter’s with ONE combined unique service at 10:00 a.m. Many of the enslaved persons held by our first rector Samuel Peters were members of this parish. As part of the service a tree will be watered in a ceremonial Pouring Libation, led by our garden committee.
The tree will later be planted in the Memorial Garden to remember those enslaved persons who were members of St. Peter’s Church.
Please join us on this memorable occasion.

Pride Sunday at St. Peters
To coincide with the PRIDE weekend in town we will hold our first official PRIDE Sunday at 9 a.m. on Sunday June 23rd as part of PRIDE month. For the past two years we have had sermons on the topic of LGBTQ concerns and the experience of what it is like to live as members of these communities. This Sunday’s sermon will hopefully help us all better understand the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity, especially in a time when those of us in these communities are feeling the effects of being targeted for attacks again.
Please join us to support friends and neighbors in this part of our community.

Mark Your Calendars: September 8, 2024 Pariah-wide Meeting

Following the one worship service at 9:00am, the Journey Committee which is charged with leading the projects of improvements in the church will host another update on the projects. We are preparing for the 200th anniversary of the church building on October 18, 2026. The committee is inviting you to a second meeting to provide an update on the projects and what we will need to achieve our goals. We will meet on Sunday, September 8 following the 9:00am service. This second update follows the one presented to the parish one year ago on September 10, 2023 at which the parish saw the entire vision for what we hope to achieve in time for the 200th anniversary and prepare our church for its third century of service. Like last year, it will be a potluck luncheon with the presentation and ask you to help by preparing a dish.

On January 19th at 3:00 p.m. St. Peter’s will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration sponsored jointly between our Sanctuary Performing Arts and the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) who we partner with often for things like MLK and Juneteenth. This is our third year to sponsor a MLK program with them. This year however is the first time we are honoring King with a concert. It will feature works of 19th, 20th, and 21st century composers. It most especially features Sawney Freeman, an enslaved person who escaped and came to CT. He composed in the early 1800s. His music was discovered after more than 200 years of being lost in the archives at Trinity College in Hartford. Anthony Pandolfe, music director at St. John’s Essex and band director at Edwin O. Smith High School found it and arranged it for strings. While we cannot prove it, he may be one of the earliest African American composers in the country.

The Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is getting a face-lift. It will be anchored by pancakes plus more. This year, will feature a breakfast buffet. You will be able top your pancakes with various fruits, syrup whipped cream. There will be bacon as well as sausage and the traditional canned peaches and pears. There will also be a juice bar with orange, Apple, and Tart cherry juice along with sparkling wine to make mimosas. We also welcome Paczki a traditional Polish pre-Lenten dessert. The youth will be developing a play list of Mardi Gras music to
take us to Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. At some point during the celebration, we will step outside to burn last year’s Palm Sunday palms to be used for Ash Wednesday the following day. There is a sign-up list so we can all pitch in to bring this party to life. You will find a sign-up sheet in the back of church, as well as on the table in the Foyer of Phelps Hall.
If you prefer, you may call Claire at 860-228-3244 or email: office@stpetershebron.com to reserve.

Coalition on Diversity and Equity Rally for LGBTQ : Sunday, March 9, 2025 2-3p.m. Hebron Center
Many members of the LGBTQ community are feeling anxious, disheartened, angry, or afraid. Some aren’t sure if they will be safe where they live or work. Some are concerned about the future status of their marriage or about receiving gender affirming care.
We have an opportunity to show our love and support for the Queer community in our hometown. East Hampton Pride and Small Town Pride — groups that are part of CoDE — are holding a peaceful rally in Hebron this weekend.
Here’s our chance to show our LGBTQ neighbors that they are not alone — that we are a community and we have their back.
We’ll gather at 1PM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 30 Church Street, to make signs. Together, we’ll walk to the center of town.
Please join us! Your presence will matter.

Lenten Book Study: Mondays in Lent March 10-April 14, 11:30-1:00p.m.
The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom, March 10-April 14 11:30-1:00p.m. In Person at Phelps Hall or on Zoom
Our Lenten Book Study Group will meet for six weeks of Lent to explore this book by theologian Henri Nouwen.
This is Henri Nouwen’s secret journal. It was written during the most difficult period of his life, when he suddenly lost his self-esteem, his energy to live and work, his sense of being loved—even his hope in God. Although he experienced excruciating anguish and despair, he was still able to keep a journal in which he wrote a daily spiritual imperative to himself that emerged from his conversations with friends and supporters.
For more than eight years, Nouwen felt that his journal was too raw and private to share with others. Instead, he published The Return of the Prodigal Son to express some of the insights gained during his mental and spiritual crisis. But then friends asked him, “Why keep your anguish hidden from the many people who have been nurtured by your writing? Wouldn’t it be a consolation to know about the fierce inner battle that lies underneath your spiritual insights?”

For the countless men and women who live through the pain of broken relationships or suffer from the loss of a loved one, this book about the inner voice of love offers new courage, new hope, and even new life.
We are trying on something. We know that several people can’t make every week in person but may be able to join us via zoom. So if you can join us in person please do. If you want to join via zoom you are welcome do to so. Here is the link and password you can join our group Passcode 107617

Mark your calendars to join members of the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) who will hold the annual Juneteenth celebration at St. Peter’s. The day begins with worship at 10am one service and starts of summer schedule. The highlights will be the descendants of the enslaved members of the Peters family who will lead worship in the church including music. We will all process out of the church to the memorial garden where we will dedicate a memorial stone “In Memory of all Enslaved Persons in our Community.” Following the dedication the Juneteenth festival will be held in the parish hall until 2pm featuring music, poetry, and the story of the Peters family acted out by the descendants. Instead of regular coffee hours, all will be treated to free lunch, coffee of course and other beverages. So, mark your calendar and plan to join us to celebrate this National Holiday. All of us can help spread the word by posting this link on your Facebook page or other social media: https://code-diversity.org/2025/05/06/juneteenth-celebration-in-hebron/

Some old returning favorites from the past few years, as well as some fun new pieces including our very first commissioned work! The Chorus is a program within The Hebron Town Center Project. It is an honor to host them at St. Peter’s and support their efforts. They are hoping to have their spring concert on the theme of the 250th and perform it at RHAM to a larger audience.

Music Moves Hartford 12-13-2025
Music Moves Hartford (MMH), was formed in 2018 as a collaborative effort between
Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford and Cuatro Puntos, a non-profit organization that works
to amplify persecuted, silenced or underrepresented musicians. Marianne Vogel (formerly
music director at Gilead Congregational Church in Hebron) now coordinates MMH as part of
her role as Music Director at the Episcopal Cathedral in Hartford. She says, “Music
Moves Hartford is a true community-based choir of people from all walks of life.” The
group rehearses at Hands On Hartford, an organization helping hundreds of people receive
food, housing, and medical and behavioral health resources. Each week as many as 30-40
people gather to sing and build community. In this concert MMH will perform some of their
own pieces of music and lead a carol sing to get us into the spirit of the season. A reception
following the concert will provide an opportunity to meet the group and thank them for coming.
In addition to this concert, MMH is also performing at Hartford Stage, Center Church and
South Congregational Church in Hartford during this holiday season.
Recommended donation $20 at the door.
Your donation will support their on-going mission to support singers from all walks of life.
Registration Required – donation at the door. Please reserve your tickets by going here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/music-moves-hartford-ushers-in-the-christmas-season-tickets-1975881168765?aff=oddtdtcreator

In March of 1857, the largest sale of human beings in the history in the United States took place at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. During the two days of the sale, raindrops fell unceasingly on the racetrack. It was almost as though the heavens were crying. So, too, fell teardrops from many of the 436 men, women, and children who were auctioned off during the two days. The sale would thereafter be known as “the weeping time.”

This play is the first theatrical production of the Sanctuary Performing Arts (SPA) inside St. Peter’s church, will dramatically portray the events of that fateful day. This event marks the fourth consecutive year St. Peter’s and SPA joins with the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) to sponsor an event marking the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Adapted for the stage and directed by Ms. Laurie Maria Cabral who has a long career in community theater in CT. She was founder of the Hole in the Wall Community Theater in New Britain. A total of 17 people will bring this to life for us all. This is a must-see event, and we anticipate a sold-out crowd. Reception to follow with a conversation session with the cast in the parish hall.
