In medieval times Tenebrae came to be ce lebrated on evenings earlier in the week as a devotional prelude to Maundy Thursday\, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.\nThis service is marked by a re ading from the book of Lamentations and the gradual extinguishing of candl es after the recitation of psalms or Canticles until the single Pascal can dle\, considered a symbol of the Lord\, remains. The name Tene brae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows\,” and has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning service of H oly Week. In medieval times Tenebrae came to be celebrated on evenings ear lier in the week as a devotional prelude to Maundy Thursday\, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

This service is marked by a reading from the bo ok of Lamentations and the gradual extinguishing of candles after the reci tation of psalms or Canticles until the single Pascal candle\, considered a symbol of the Lord\, remains. Towards the end of the service\, this cand le is removed\, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil with the death of Jesus. A loud noise is made symbolizing the chaos of the wor ld without the light of Christ. The Pascal candle is restored to its place and by its light (the light of Christ) all depart in silence.

St. Peter’s will be one of the sites and Fr. Ron will dress again as Samuel P eters\, and be providing tours and sharing history of the church.\nWitness Stone Installation & Research Display (From 4-6pm) The Hebron Historical Society and RHAM Middle School students have been researching history of A frican American farming in the center of the village. On Saturday\, May 30 th at 4:00 they will be installing a Witness Stone on the property\, follo wed by a display of the student work and research findings in the parish h all. \nThe stone will be placed on a pillar between the church building an d the former home of Governor John Peters\, located to the north of the ch urch. The Witness Stone commemorates the wonderful work by Governor Peters in reassembling farm land across the street that includes our nature pres erve and the 87 additional acres owned by the town. This land has histori cal significance going back to Native Americans some 10\,000 years and has an important story of African American farming and emancipation.
