St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will hold a huge tag sale on Friday\, June 6th and Saturday\, June 7th from 9 – 3 each day.

We will have a variety of items: t ools\, household items\, linens\, small furniture\, jewelry\, children’s t oys\, decorative items\, antiques\, kitchen items\, glassware\, and more! This speech was given by Frederick Douglass in June 1852 to the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society. It became one of Douglass’s m ost famous speeches—criticizing the chasm between America’s Founding princ iples and the institution of slavery. Douglass lamented that Independence Day wasn’t a day of celebration for enslaved people. At the same time\, he urged his audience to read the U.S. Constitution not as a pro-slavery d ocument\, but as a “GLORIOUS LIBERTY DOCUMENT.”

Since 1 985 actor and orator Fred Morsell has embodied Frederick Douglass in perfo rmances across the country. He brought his character to life in Washingto n DC\, bringing it to every high school thanks to a grant by the National Humanities Council and the Caring Institute. He will perform this great sp eech as part of the Juneteenth Weekend in collaboration with the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE). Now 85 years old he will be coming to us all the way from his home in Montana. His performance is in the great tr adition of historical enactment performers\, much in the same way Hal Holb rook embodied Mark Twain. The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shado ws\,” and has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning service of Holy Week. In medieval times Tenebrae came to be celebrated on evenings earlier in the week as a devotional prelude to Mau ndy Thursday\, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

This service is mark ed by a reading from the book of Lamentations and the gradual extinguishin g of candles after the recitation of psalms or Canticles until the single Pascal candle\, considered a symbol of the Lord\, remains. Towards the end of the service\, this candle is removed\, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil with the death of Jesus. A loud noise is made symbo lizing the chaos of the world without the light of Christ. The Pascal cand le is restored to its place and by its light (the light of Christ) all dep art in silence.

On January 19 ^th at 3:00 p.m. St. Peter’s will host a Martin Luther King\, Jr . celebration sponsored jointly between our Sanctuary Performing Arts and the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) who we partner with often for things like MLK and Juneteenth. This is our third year to sponsor a MLK p rogram with them. This year however is the first time we are honoring King with a concert. It will feature works of 19th\, 20th\, and 21st century c omposers. It most especially features Sawney Freeman\, an enslaved person who escaped and came to CT. He composed in the early 1800s. His music wa s discovered after more than 200 years of being lost in the archives at Tr inity College in Hartford. Anthony Pandolfe\, music director at St. John’ s Essex and band director at Edwin O. Smith High School found it and arran ged it for strings. While we cannot prove it\, he may be one of the earli est African American composers in the country.

The Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is getting a face-l ift. It will be anchored by pancakes plus more. This year\, will feature a breakfast buffet. Our Lenten Book Study Group will meet for six w eeks of Lent to explore this book by theologian Henri Nouwen.
\n
This is Henri Nouwen’s secret journal. It was written during the most difficul t period of his life\, when he suddenly lost his self-esteem\, his energy to live and work\, his sense of being loved—even his hope in God. Although he experienced excruciating anguish and despair\, he was still able to ke ep a journal in which he wrote a daily spiritual imperative to himself tha t emerged from his conversations with friends and supporters.
\n
For more than eight years\, Nouwen felt that his journal was too raw and priva te to share with others. Instead\, he published The Return of the Prodi gal Son to express some of the insights gained during his mental and s piritual crisis. But then friends asked him\, “Why keep your anguish hidde n from the many people who have been nurtured by your writing? Wouldn’t it be a consolation to know about the fierce inner battle that lies undernea th your spiritual insights?”

The day begin s with worship at 10am one service and starts of summer schedule. The hig hlights will be the descendants of the enslaved members of the Peters fami ly who will lead worship in the church including music. We will all proces s out of the church to the memorial garden where we will dedicate a memori al stone “In Memory of all Enslaved Persons in our Community.” Following the dedication the Juneteenth festival will be held in the parish hall unt il 2pm featuring music\, poetry\, and the story of the Peters family acted out by the descendants. The Hebron Chorus is launching their fifth season this fall with a wonderful concert. For the Fall concert\, they will be celebr ating their 5th season with a concert built on the theme of Thankfulness. \nThe final dinner of the year wil l take place in just two weeks at St. Peter’s.  Note the time is moved up to 3:30 since it will be getting dark earlier after the time change.  It i s our Roasted Pork Tenderloin Dinner.  The menu includes Roast Pork Tender loin\, Pork Gravy\, Roasted Potatoes\, Mashed Squash\, Homemade applesauce \, dinner roll and Your Choice of Desserts.

\nThe cost is $17 per person.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Windham Area Inter faith Ministries Walk for Warmth\, which provides heating assistance to th ose in need this winter. Music Moves Hartford (MMH)\, was formed in 2018 as a collabo rative effort between
\nChrist Church Cathedral in Hartford and Cuatr o Puntos\, a non-profit organization that works
\nto amplify persecut ed\, silenced or underrepresented musicians. Marianne Vogel (formerly
\nmusic director at Gilead Congregational Church in Hebron) now coordinat es MMH as part of
\nher role as Music Director at the Episcopal Cathe dral in Hartford. She says\, “Music
\nMoves Hartford is a true commun ity-based choir of people from all walks of life.” The
\ngroup rehear ses at Hands On Hartford\, an organization helping hundreds of people rece ive
\nfood\, housing\, and medical and behavioral health resources. E ach week as many as 30-40
\npeople gather to sing and build community . In this concert MMH will perform some of their
\nown pieces of musi c and lead a carol sing to get us into the spirit of the season. A recepti on
\nfollowing the concert will provide an opportunity to meet the gr oup and thank them for coming.
\nIn addition to this concert\, MMH is also performing at Hartford Stage\, Center Church and
\nSouth Congre gational Church in Hartford during this holiday season.

In March of 1857\, the largest sale of human beings in the history in the United States took place at a racetrac k in Savannah\, Georgia. During the two days of the sale\, raindrops fell unceasingly on the racetrack. It was almost as though the heavens were cry ing. So\, too\, fell teardrops from many of the 436 men\, women\, and chil dren who were auctioned off during the two days. The sale would thereafter be known as “the weeping time.”

This play is the first theatrical production of the Sanctuary Performing Arts (SPA) inside St. Pe ter’s church\, will dramatically portray the events of that fateful day. This event marks the fourth consecutive year St. Peter’s and SPA joins wit h the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) to sponsor an event marking the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Adapted for the stage and dir ected by Ms. Laurie Maria Cabral who has a long career in community theate r in CT. She was founder of the Hole in the Wall Community Theater in New Britain. A total of 17 people will bring this to life for us all. This i s a must-see event\, and we anticipate a sold-out crowd. Reception to foll ow with a conversation session with the cast in the parish hall.
